Profile Summary

After earning her degree in English from the University of Oxford, Anne Clark began her career in publishing at Stanley Thornes in 1989, where she developed a passion for publishing for children whilst working in their educational department. She then went on to become a commissioning editor and a key part of the editorial teams of both Hodder Children's Books and Piccadilly Press, before leaving publishing to start her own literary agency in 2012.

Specialising in children’s and young adult fiction, Anne has already built a firm roster of clients who have earned positive reviews and are garnering nominations for prestigious awards, and she hopes to build upon this list further: “Writers: if you have a wonderful unpublished book, I would love to hear from you.”

Anne is looking for “top quality books for children and teenagers”, including picture book texts, younger, middle, teen and YA fiction, regardless of genre. She is hoping for stories "I can’t put down, characters I can’t forget, and a distinctive and confident voice. I like books which make me laugh and cry, and books which make me think and see things from a new angle.”

See the Anne Clark Literary agency website for full submission guidelines, but please do not send images, full manuscripts or incomplete work. Anne is ONLY looking for submissions for children.

Detailed data

Agency:
Anne Clark Literary Agency
Agent since:
1940
Short biography:

I have been lucky enough to work in children's books for over twenty years. Before launching the agency, I was a commissioning editor at Piccadilly Press and a commissioning editor/editorial director at Hodder Children's Books. I cut my editorial teeth in educational publishing, having started my career with a brief spell in marketing, following an English degree at Oxford. I am looking for top quality books for children and teenagers: picture book texts, younger, middle, teen and YA fiction. Whatever the genre, I'm hoping for stories I can't put down, characters I can't forget, and a distinctive and confident voice. I like books which make me laugh and cry, and books which make me think and see things from a new angle.

How to make a submission:

Other advice and background:

This is what NOT to do!

1  Please don’t include any images, as this can overload my system.

2  Don’t email the whole manuscript (except for picture books).

3  Please don’t send your book until it’s finished!

And this is what to expect.

1  You'll receive an acknowledgement when your submission arrives.

2  I aim to reply within six weeks to let you know whether I am interested in seeing more or taking things further. If you haven't heard from me after six weeks (and this may happen during busy times), please do feel free to give me a gentle nudge by email!

I'm afraid that submissions which don't follow these guidelines will not receive a reply, and postal submissions will be recycled.
