Profile Summary

After a career of almost 30 years as a fiction publisher, Anne turned to agenting in 2009. Her passion, as well as her experience, resides mostly in commercial fiction, particularly women's fiction. Generally speaking, Anne looks for similar qualities to most agents: that indefinable piece that keeps you interested and turning the page. More specifically, she is keen on women's fiction, historical fiction, and crime/thrillers.

Over the years, Anne has represented a number of saga writers. Sagas set in the UK, with a focus on working class families, are her particular cup of tea. She loves a gritty read, involving breathtaking landscapes and complex relationships beyond the romantic - this means mothers, brothers, sisters, daughters, and so on. Anne has also expressed a love for books with wintry, bleak, snowy settings.

Anne encourages writers, particularly women writers, to take their writing seriously. Love what you do and be proud of it. She has noted this is a particular issue with women writing romance. The often negative portrayal of the genre, despite its commercial success, leads women to speak flippantly or be coy about their work. But, as Anne points out, romance fiction deals with an everyday experience everyone can relate to: love.

As advice to hopeful writers, Anne has noted many dos and don'ts for submissions. They include:

  • Keep the cover letter brief and to the point
  • Do your research before submitting
  • Have a great, catchy title for your manuscript
  • Talk about other authors and books you love
  • Don't oversell/hype your book

While Anne mostly works with fiction, she is also keep on nature writing in non-fiction.

What Anne is looking for: I am keen to find well-written, engrossing fiction for which I feel I can find a market. I want a plot that will keep me engaged, characters I care about and a world that is intriguing or attractive enough for me to want to spend time in. Specifically, I am interested in women's fiction, be it contemporary or set further into the past. I am also passionate about history and historical fiction and am a fan of crime and thrillers, an area of the KHLA list I am keen to build. Though my background is largely in fiction publishing, I am also on the look out for 'new nature writing', a personal enthusiasm. In addition, I have a small number of children's authors, writing for the 11+ age group.
