Profile Summary

After beginning her career at AM Heath, Annette set up the Annette Green Authors' Agency in 1998. Three years later, David Smith joined the company. Central to Annette's ideology is providing a personal relationship with her authors. Clients never have to go through secretaries, but only ever talk directly to their agent. Many authors prefer small, independent agencies like this.

Rather than specialising in a particular genre or style of manuscript, Annette is open to almost the full gamut of fiction and non-fiction works. While the agency does not accept science fiction, fantasy, or poetry, they are interested in receiving literary fiction, commercial fiction, genre fiction, older children's and YA fiction, as well as memoirs, biographies, serious non-fiction, and pop culture works. Annette claims that she never finds manuscripts are 'great but not for us,' as if she has loved something and can see it has great potential, she'll be eager to represent it.

From her personal experiences of wading through the slush pile, Annette found that many writers needed help in editing their work and finding the flaws in it before they sent it to agents. As such, she set up an editorial consultancy company as a side project. The consultancy aspect of the business is available to everyone (at least to apply for it), though some writers who are initially rejected but show promise might be encouraged to pursue the service. Annette does concede that there is a sifting process, as it would be unfair to take money from writers who simply would not be publishable, even after working with editors and mentors.

The Annette Green Authors' Agency does not employ third-party readers. All submissions they receive are read by either Annette or David. This personal approach is commendable but does mean they may take longer to respond to a submission than a larger agency. On the other hand, no work they like will be missed a freelance reader!

Annette Green is a British literary agent who established her own business, Annette Green Authors' Agency, in 1998. Her early successes included the novelists Bill Broady, Maria McCann and Justin Hill as well as the American children's author Meg Cabot. More info on this agency:
This is an independent literary agency founded in 1998 by Annette Green. After several years at A M Heath & Co - one of the oldest agencies in London - she decided to set up her own business and seek out new, exciting writers of fiction and non-fiction. Aware that not all writers are happy in the environment of the large corporate agencies, she was determined that her agency would offer an alternative. This took the form of a personally attentive, individual service to writers whose work she admired. Rather than working through assistants and secretaries, a client of this agency would deal only with his or her agent. The philosophy has worked and the agency now enjoys a reputation for discovering major new talents, striking enviable deals and looking after the interests of its clients with energy and efficiency. In 2001 David Smith joined as a partner, during a period of rapid expansion. After graduating from Cambridge in 1985 he spent many years working in sales, marketing and distribution at the Time Out publishing group, and also trained as a lawyer at one of the City of Londons largest firms. We have always followed an energetic policy of seeking out the very best undiscovered writers of fiction; of encouraging leading figures from the worlds of broadcasting, politics, academia, media and entertainment into publishing projects; and of offering our clients a personal service that is second to none. What we look for in fiction and non-fiction alike is vision, imagination, originality, and invention, conveyed in writing which inspires passionate enthusiasm.
