Profile Summary

Anthony Goff is the MD of David Higham and was for three years President of the Association of Authors Agents, ending his term in 2012. Aside from a short spell in the editorial department at Faber, he has been an agent for all his working life.

His website bio doesn’t reveal much about his preferences –he represents work for adult and children, literary and commercial work, fiction and non-fiction – but our analysis of his list and other published sources tells us that:

  • He represents a relatively select number of actors and celebs (Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Joanna Lumley).
  • He also handles the work of some major literary names – JM Coetzee, Roald Dahl, Graham Greene, Anthony Powell, Alice Walker – as well as the work of some major older commercial names, notably the master of horror, James Herbert, and more recent bestsellers such as Alice ‘Lovely Bones’ Sebold.
  • Those names might all be somewhat intimidating, but Goff does continue to take on and sell newer, younger writers – for example, Jenn Ashworth whose A Kind of Intimacy came out in 2009; or Nina Bell whose work debuted in 2010;
  • Goff also represents some unserious, good fun commercial fiction – for example, Rebecca Chance’s fun, glamorous chick-lit, Lauren Henderson’s feisty and sexy crime novels (eg: Too Many Blondes, The Black Rubber Dress) and the same author’s rom-coms; Terence Strong’s authentic, tough thrillers.
  • He also represents serious non-fiction in the fields of travel and anthropology (Nigel Barley); cognitive science (Nina Bell); literary biography (Gordon Bowker, Geoffrey Wall); politics and society (David Marquand).

Overall, it will be harder to attract an offer of representation from Anthony Goff than others in his agency or on our database, but it’s clear that he is still actively adding – albeit selectively – to his client list.

Other advice and background:

"The big publishers have invested much too much in celebrity titles in recent years and the return on that investment has been very patchy. The reason this matters is that as a result they've had less money to invest in proper books; and at Christmas their energy, and that of bookshops, has been taken up with publishing this stuff. It's using up too much of the oxygen and it's sad to see publishers sometimes looking like part of the PR industry".
