Profile Summary

Bill Goodall is Annette Crossland's partner-in-crime, having formed A for Authors in 2014.

Bill worked as a salesman in publishing for 25 years prior to joining A for Authors as a director. He worked for publishers including Virgin Books, Simon & Schuster (a Big 5 multinational publisher), Jessica Kingsley and Frances Lincoln / Aurum Press.

If you've already looked at our profile of Annette, you'll observe that we have some reservations about the way the agency currently presents itself to writers. Many of the agency's authors have not, as yet, sold a book: which is perfectly fine, of course -- everyone has to start somewhere -- but the agency's list of sales is significantly shorter than its list of authors. What's more, in a good many cases where sales have been achieved, they are to the No Exit Press (the crime and thriller imprint of the smallish independent publisher, Oldcastle Books.) Since Annette Crossland used to run No Exit Press, it's not absolutely clear the extent to which the agency is capable of making major sales to major UK publishers . . . though of course these are very early days, and the agency is certainly one to watch.

The agency seems to have its principal strength and interest in commercial fiction, and most particularly crime, but it has an interest in receiving submissions across the board. The only real exclusions are sci-fi, fantasy, and horror. Also no poetry, no short stories, and nothing for stage, screen, or radio. They were previously accepting YA submissions but have said they will no longer consider the genre, suggesting that either they are moving away from the genre as a specialty or that their list already contains enough YA.

We're very aware that this is a young agency with a need to prove itself. If anyone can give us more data than we have so far, we'd be mighty obliged if you'd get in touch. Do keep an eye on their website's submission guidelines as they occasionally close for submissions -- if you send in a submission during one of those periods, they will delete the submission without reading it and without warning.
