Profile Summary

Bryony acknowledges that she is a bit of a trailblazer – driven and persistent, Bryony set up the DKW Agency with fellow agent Ella Diamond Kahn only a few years into her career as an agent. This ballsy move illustrates exactly what Bryony is about. She makes opportunities for herself, looks outside of the box, and is always looking for innovative solutions for her problems. Her success has been recognized with a number of awards from making The Bookseller’s Rising Star list in 2013, the London Book Fair Trailblazer Awards 2016 and the Young Stationers’ Prize 2016.

While Bryony’s list covers a wide range of fiction – from historical fiction to YA to commercial women’s fiction – and non-fiction, from the various interviews she has done, it is obvious that Bryony loves a darker story. Everything from gothic-inspired ghost stories, fairytale-influenced twists, to fantasy and time travel, Bryony loves to see an interesting and dark take on both literary and commercial fiction. Manuscripts that catch her eye often transport her to other places – physical or temporal – that capture her interest. For younger readers, she is eager to see some great adventure tales with a focus on friendship.

When submitting your work, ensure that you have proofread your work and done your research for the agent. She cites numerous submissions where authors have spelled her name wrong, don’t be one of them! Another piece of advice Bryony has commented on is to make sure you include details about yourself and the manuscript you are selling in your covering letter – this might sound obvious but she’s had multiple covering letters that don’t mention the book at all.

In this rapidly changing world of publishing, a young agent who isn’t afraid to take chances and approach the industry in new and inventive ways might just be the answer.

Short biography:
Before co-founding DKW, Bryony spent two years at the Caroline Sheldon Literary Agency, where she worked closely with Caroline Sheldon and her list of bestselling authors and illustrators, dealing with top publishers both in the UK and abroad. Her experience ranges from picture books to contemporary fiction. She has several years' experience handling author/publisher negotiations and loves negotiating publishing contracts to an almost absurd degree. Prior to this, she has spent time at various London literary agencies, as well as working as a specialist bookseller and spending two years in the library sector. From 2010 - 2011 she held the post of University Liaison Officer for the Society of Young Publishers, where she visited universities across the UK giving talks and workshops to help graduates break into the publishing industry. How to make a submission:
Standard submission. Email: submissions.bryony@dkwlitagency.co.uk. Please do not send your work to both of us in the agency. If we feel that your submission is more suited to the other agent we will pass it on to them.
Other advice and background:
I'm often asked for advice on how best to approach an agent. But to be honest, the only thing an agent cares about when looking at your submission is that you've written a damn good book. Other than that, I'd simply advise that you check individual agency guidelines, keep your approach smart and professional, and that you're passionate about your work. If that passion shines through in your covering letter, an agent is more likely to want to pick up your manuscript and start reading.
