Profile Summary

Camilla acknowledges that an agent's priorities are torn between the business mind and personal taste. While agents try to find books that tap into a trend, fill a gap in the market, and are natural bestsellers, they also have to contend with something far less logical: their preferences. What stories and characters you fall in love with are not easily definable and may not always fit neatly into what the business mind wants to find.

Camilla's list is built on a combination of previously established writers as well as debut authors. She represents mostly crime, thrillers, and women's fiction – broadly defined as commercial fiction. Having been a crime novel lover since the tender age of 14, this is definitely one of Camilla's first loves. She wants to be kept up at night by tens cliffhangers and exciting mysteries. The creepier and darker the better!

On the other side of things, she loves an unusual and realistic romance. Make sure your characters are three-dimensional and that the emotions represented in the narrative are honest. As a Jilly Cooper fan, throwing in a bit of sex won't hurt your chances either! She also loves a good underdog story in any genre.

When it comes to a particular aspect of the writing, Camilla is drawn to strong voices. Just as with an agent, first impressions with readers is very important. Before readers get to know characters or a twisty plot, they connect with the author's narrative voice. It can make or break a novel, so is absolutely key to Camilla's decision on whether or not to represent a writer.

Authors & books liked:
As a reader I fall head-over-heels in love with stories and characters. I just can't help myself. Outside of our own authors and books, there are lots of tales that have changed how I've viewed the world, taught me something new, and most importantly made me shout about the book to anyone who will listen. Books that have stayed with me for years are CIRCLE OF FRIENDS by Maeve Binchy (the betrayal Benny suffered at the hands of Jack is something that both horrified and then comforted me as a teenager, because you couldn't get better than Benny, Jack messed up but always knew this), POSTMORTEM by Patricia Cornwell (this is the book that got me hooked to crime and thrillers. I love learning something new and this gives an incredible insight into not just the darkness in humans but also the amazing things science can reveal), RIDERS by Jilly Cooper (I still have a huge crush on Rupert Campbell-Black and secretly wish I was Taggie), BERNICE BOBS HER HAIR by F. Scott Fitzgerald (Scott Fitzgerald's short stories are incredible and the story of Bernice really inspired), ESIO TROT by Roald Dahl (the moment you realize Esio Trot is tortoise backwards is remarkable, it definitely fueled my craving to work things out and love of surprises). All of THE SADDLE CLUB by Bonnie Bryant and POINT HORROR books, especially by R L Stine. Contemporary books that stand out to me personally in the past couple of years are THE HELP by Kathryn Stockett, GONE GIRL by Gillian Flynn, THE TIME TRAVELERS WIFE by Audrey Niffenegger, THE PASSAGE by Justin Cronin, HUNGER GAMES by Suzanne Collins and all of Emily Giffin books.
Other loves & passions:
I get very obsessed with TV drama and series, eg Mad Men, Mistress, The Bridge, The Killing, Veronica Mars, Sex and the City - which I guess is an extension of being nosey and loving the chance to experience another life and time. What Charlie Brooker has achieved with BLACK MIRROR is mind blowing and the best television I've watched for a very long time. I also love nature (especially animals), dancing, 90s hip hop and Elton John. My all-time hero is David Attenborough.
How to make a submission:
Really think about a one or two line pitch for your submission. Something that will make a reader instantly sit up and want to read your story. When there's a great pitch I take serious notice because it shows you've really thought about your characters, story and how they fit into the market today. Also I think a great pitch really encourages and allows word of mouth to build around your story, and this is gold dust when it comes to building reader awareness. Also something else I really like is when authors give a clue to where they see their book, for example, if it's in the vein of something or inspired by a certain author, film maker or film.
Other advice and background:
I'll consider and read any fiction, from Childrens' to YA and adult - so I can't think of what would be on this list. As long as there's a character to 100% invest and believe in, and a story that really gets under your skin then I'm happy!
