Profile Summary

Unfortunately, United Agents is not an agency that likes to disclose much about its agents beyond their client list and Charles himself doesn’t have much of an online footprint.  The details of his career history are a bit blurry but we do know that he worked at PFD before becoming a founding member of United Agents in 2007.

He represents book authors, screenwriters, directors and composers.  High profile clients include national treasure Alan Bennett, former children’s laureate Michael Rosen, and celebrated poet and author Roger McGough. .

We’ve studied Charles’ list and a few other sources and conclude that:

  • There is a marked bias towards TV dramatists.   His clients write for a host of successful British series including East Enders, Shetland, Silent Witness, WPC56 and New Tricks. He also covers film and television rights for a number of other UA agents’ clients (for Emma Brockes and Christopher Brookmyre)
  • He represents both literary and commercial fiction.  Crime writing supremo Ruth Rendall (and her alias Barbara Vine) is a client.
  • Non-fiction often tends to have a populist or general interest angle.  For example Dan Cruickshank ‘Adventures in Architecture’ and ‘The Country House Revealed’ (both of which had TV tie-ins)
  • List features a small number of poets, but they are very well established.  We wouldn’t advise you to approach him with your poetry unless you have already secured publication of your work and have a strong profile within the poetry community.
  • For book submissions, he asks for a synopsis, the first three chapters and a covering letter
  • Twitter offers further insights into his literary interests @charlesfwalker

Sadly, none of above gives much clue as to Charles’s core passions and interests. We have asked for more detail from the agent in question and will publish new material when we have it.  If any subscribers are able to fill in some gaps for this agent, please do get in touch.

Generally, we ask you to email a full outline for non-fiction projects, or a synopsis of your novel and the first three chapters, together with covering note telling us about yourself and your writing career to date.
