Profile Summary

Charlie Viney is a senior agent and the Director of the Viney Agency. He came to agenting via a job as a bookseller and a twenty-five-year career in general trade publishing. He is a published author and was previously a board Director at publishing house Little, Brown.

Unfortunately, the agency does not publish an individual client list, and Charlie has not yet responded to our requests for further information, so it is tricky for new authors to pinpoint what he is looking for in a new client. Our researchers have looked through the agency's client list and offer some pointers on what Charlie and his colleagues are looking for below:

Interested in taking on debut authors and writers who are mid-career and looking for a change in directionThe agency represents over 100 different authors and Charlie has said that his 'ambition was always to run a literary agency representing clients writing across a broad range of genres . The agency has is particularly strong in children's and adult fiction, history, biography and comedy. Accessible literary fiction is likely to appeal. Current clients include Isabel Ashdown (Flight, Glasshopper) and Susan Elliot Wright (The Secrets We Leave Behind). Literary criticism, sport, popular culture, travel guides and music are also well represented. They would be a good target for teenage fiction as they have a growing young adult list, featuring writers like L.J Adlington, author of 'Night Witches'The historical list features books by both academics and high profile public figures, including General Richard Dannat (Leading From the Front) and historian Miranda Kaufmann (Black Tudors).Charlie has a good eye for historical fiction and launched the career of Ben Kane, author of a number bestselling novels about the Roman Empire (Eagles at War, The Road to Rome)The agency likes very commercial, Christmas, best seller type books. One of their most famous clients is the ubiquitous Meerkat known as Aleksandr Orlov...

The Viney Agency
Agent since:
Short biography:

I have been an agent since 2002 and The Viney Agency is now one of the UK's most successful independent literary agencies, representing a very diverse range of clients writing across a broad range of subjects. I first started in the book trade as a bookseller (gaining invaluable insights into book buying habits) and then enjoyed a twenty five year career in general trade publishing, mostly working in international sales and marketing, later becoming a board director at the major British publishing house of Little, Brown. I am the author of five published books - none of which won prizes - but writing was invaluable experience for my later career as an agent, giving me a much better understanding of the pressures that authors can be under. Being a literary agent is my dream job, combining my love of books and business while enabling me to work very closely with our wonderful authors and manage their careers across all media.
