Profile Summary

Danielle is the newest agent at LBA, with a dual focus of building a YA list and an eclectic list of SF and fantasy authors. She doesn’t, as yet, have a long list of authors for us to analyse, but she’s given a very useful interview to Tor Books about her specific tastes in SF and fantasy.

The link is given below, and we do encourage users to read the full text, but we can offer the following highlights:

  • Epic, high fantasy is a particular love. She mentions Trudi Canavan and Patrick Rothfuss as particular favourites, but also admits that ‘faceless characters wearing robes’ get her every time.
  • Any kind of SFF crossover genre is of interest to her. So there’s a particular vogue for crime / fantasy mashups at the moment, but any collision of one genre with a more speculative one would be of interest.
  • Ditto, anything that involves complex, intelligent, well thought through world building, especially if those worlds challenge the way we think about families, society, identity, religion . . . or indeed, if those books make us think hard about the world we actually live in.
  • She’s also a fan of dark fantasy and wants to read anything that involves the neglected creatures of old-style fairy tales: bring on the merpeople, the fae, the sirens and the rest.
  • She’s also happy with gruesome and violent: one of the projects she’s currently working on involves a heretic pharaoh, to whom good things do not happen.

Danielle is a very new agent, so will be more keen than most to receive submissions and, perhaps, to work with authors whose work is aglitter with promise but not yet oven-ready. Overall, LBA is a commercially-driven agency, with plenty of sales ambition, and we presume that Danielle shares those goals.

Detailed data

Agency:
Luigi Bonomi Associates
Agent since:
2014
Short biography:

After reading Philosophy and Theology at Oxford University I spent a year working with a number of publishers and agencies. In 2014 I joined the team at LBA as a Junior Agent, and have since been actively building my list.

Client list status:
Keen to build client list
Genres this agent is interested in:
Young adult fiction, Food and Cookery, Science fiction, Paranormal romance, Historical fiction, Genre romance, Fantasy, General Fiction
Authors & books liked:

Trudi Canavan, Jeffrey Eugenides, John Green.

"I'm looking for captivating genre and YA fiction. On the genre side I'm particularly interested in fantasy and science fiction books with beautifully constructed worlds and unforgettable characters. When it comes to YA I'm looking for something original that I won't be able to put down, whether highly-commercial or literary. I'll also consider well-written romance and New Adult fiction. My non-fiction interests lie mainly in mouth-watering cookbooks."

Other loves & passions:

She is a particular fan of authors (such as Orson Scott Card, Ernest Cline and Hugh Howey) who deliver very fully imagined, thought-provoking and well-executed worlds. She loves high fantasy and epic storylines in the tradition of Tolkein (though more contemporary models would be Trudi Canavan and Patrick Rothfuss.) She comments that if she comes across "faceless character wearing a robe" as the main image for a book jacket, then she's sold. The current vogue for crime/fantasy mashups (eg: James Oswald, David Aaronavitch) is also nectar to this particular bee.

How to make a submission:
by email. Detailed advice on website.
Other advice and background:

She's a fan of complex, intelligent world creation in SFF. She also says, " I’d love to see more challenging of societal norms in sci-fi – whether that be to our social constructs of families and relationships or even our concepts of identity. There’s so much scope to push boundaries and subvert expectations and it’s wonderful when this is done well. I also love books that explore alternate forms of religion and belief systems, ones that really make you think."
