Profile Summary

A young and highly driven agent, Ella set up Diamond Kahn and Woods Literary Agency with Bryony Woods in 2012. Her passion and drive have landed her numerous industry recognitions including a spot on the 2013 Bookseller's Rising Stars list, the 2016 London Book Fair Trailblazer Awards and the Young Stationers’ Prize 2016.

For the most part, Ella is interested in fiction. While she does take the occasional non-fiction piece, her wishlists and general interests are focused in commercial and literary fiction. She represents a range of adult, children's (ages 9-12), and YA fiction. Ella's interests range from historical and women's fiction to science fiction, fantasy, and thrillers. It should be noted that she has a weakness for fairytales and fairytale retellings. On her manuscript wishlists of the past few years has been crossover genre fiction with wide, commercial appeal.

When it comes to submissions, Ella asks authors to make sure they cover the right sort of content in the cover letters – she (and other agents!) want to know what the book is about. It's great to get a sense of the author's personality and their professional history but the one crucial piece, that is also often overlooked, is the hard pitch on the book. Think about what would make you pick up a book in a bookstore and try to sell your book to an agent in the same way.

To really catch Ella's attention your manuscript needs an excellent hook. Outside of solid writing, a unique voice, three-dimensional characters, and a good plot, what she loves to see is a truly original and intriguing concept. And be sure to remember that trend chasing is never a good idea. Write a story that you love and you would want to read rather than trying to pre-empt a market trend – by the time your book is published, that trend will be long gone.

Authors & books liked:
I love the creative side of the agent/author relationship, and finding authors bursting with energy and ideas. I'm always happy to consider any commercial/literary fiction for adults, from high-concept crime/suspense and thrillers to contemporary women's fiction for the reading group market. I do have a couple of areas of particular interest: I would love to find some strong and original historical fiction, and am also very keen on accessible science fiction and fantasy, including historical fantasy and time-travel stories, or other genre mixes, such as historical suspense or sci-fi thrillers. I am also looking for children's fiction for the 9-12 and YA age groups in any genre, but again, I'd particularly love some science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction. What I'm looking for above all are high-concept, plot-driven books with exceptional voice, engaging characters, and intriguing settings: books that take you to new, richly imagined worlds, unusual times and far-flung places. I am also interested in narrative non-fiction, focusing on social and cultural history, historical biography and archaeology, written for a discerning commercial audience.
Other loves & passions:
I'm fascinated by history and archeology, the older the better, and am also interested in art, architecture, and interior design. I love to cook and eat out, but am happiest curled up at home with a good book, or watching sci-fi thriller films on TV!
How to make a submission:
Standard submission. Email: submissions.ella@dkwlitagency.co.uk Please do not send your work to both of us in the agency. If we feel that your submission is more suited to the other agent we will pass it on to them.
Other advice and background:
Although I'm actively looking for fantasy, I am not interested in paranormal romances, orc-heavy epics, or horror. I won't be the right person for very boy-sy fiction, highly literary, introspective novels in which nothing much really happens, or erotica. On the children's side, I'm not looking for younger fiction or picture books, 9-12 and YA only please. Focus on telling me what your book is about above anything else - I want a strong pitch that draws me in and gets to the heart of your novel. Don't get hung up on the little details of fonts and line spacing, but do be professional and follow our guidelines, and personalize your submission - that means targeting me for a clear reason, and spelling my name correctly!

Please do not send your work to both of us. If we feel that your submission is more suited to the other agent we will pass it on to them.
