Other advice and background:
It may be best to approach a big literary agency - they have more juniors and work experience students to read submissions. Keep the day job ! It is very hard to make a living writing full time. Attend conferences and stay current with what is happening in the industry - who is publishing what? Do your homework on the agency - from basic (her agency is called Faith Evans Associates but she gets letters addressed to Dear Sir) to substantive (who do they represent, why might they be interested in you). Pitch your letter somewhere between deference and a proper sense of self worth. Be concise but clear. Let your voice shine through.
