Profile Summary

Faith O’Grady has run the literary department of the Lisa Richards' talent agency since 1998.  She has a well-established list of around fifty authors and represents commercial fiction, literary fiction, non-fiction and children’s fiction for the over eights.  Our researchers have summarised the salient points below:

  • Interested in non-fiction submissions in the genres of memoir, humour, sports, history, narrative, biography, lifestyle, self-help and pop culture. She represents the multi-award winning comedy writer Paul Howard (best known as the creator of Ross O’Carroll-Kelly, a fictional rugby jock).  Other notable non-fiction clients include cyclist, Nicholas Roche, and Irish Times Journalist, Chris Dooley.
  • Fiction submissions must have ‘distinctive voices, original, strong storylines, and intriguing characters’.  Past success stories include Christine Dwyer Hickey’s The Cold Eye of Heaven, which won the Irish Novel of the Year of the Year.
  • Lisa only takes on a handful of new writers each year.  Clients must be able to answer the following questions ‘what is the plot catalyst? What sets off the dramatic conflict? This usually happens in the first 30 or so pages, so you need to think about what that is. Who are the main characters and what is the setting?’  She has previously said that she likes an interesting historical or geographical background
  • She doesn’t accept horror, science fiction, screenplays, or children’s picture books.  Prospective clients are advised to research the agency client list to find out if your book is compatible with the existing list
  • Finally, you will need to have a clear genre and know where your book fits in the marketplace.

I studied at Trinity College, Dublin, and have a background in publishing. I have been working at the Lisa Richards Agency in Dublin since 1998, when Lisa and Richard Cook asked me to set up the literary department.

For fiction, I am always looking for exciting new writing – distinctive voices, original, strong storylines, and intriguing characters.

I am also looking for quality non-fiction, including memoir, history, narrative, biography, lifestyle, sports, self-help, quirky humour and pop culture.

Authors & books liked:

Voice is almost impossible to explain but you know it immediately. I love getting the post and seeing the stack, thinking there could be something amazing there, an original voice. A distinctive voice is itself, not trying to imitate anyone else. It shows the author has a mastery of the genre and you want to be in their world. I like warmth, emotion, humour; but it's very hard to achieve. I love feeling emotional; especially in original stories, interesting historical or geographical background. You can see when it's contrived - it has to come naturally and organically. They don't have to be nice characters but they do have to be intriguing.

Other loves & passions:

How to make a submission:
Agency standard submission.
Other advice and background:

Manuscripts have to be pristine, but she's not dogmatic about it. If she spots talent, even if it's a little raggedy around the edges, she won't dismiss it out of hand.
