Profile Summary

Hannah turned to agenting after a successful career at Macmillan Children's Books and heading up the Headline YA list. While she continues to be passionate about children's and YA publishing, Hannah's first love is working with authors to make their manuscripts the best they can possibly be. Agents work much more closely with their authors than editors, making it the perfect role for her.

Joining the DHH Literary Agency in 2013, Hannah has built a client list that focuses on YA and crossover novels, with a few books for younger children (from the age of nine onwards) and adult books as well. For adults, Hannah is most keen on thrillers and romance novels. Her particular loves tend to be darker stories, but she admits to being a sucker for a great, lighter modern romance. Describing what she looks for in submissions, Hannah 'likes stories that push the boundaries, have a strong voice and, often, a dark edge'.

Part of the reason Hannah, and other agents, only take on books they are truly passionate about is that they end up reading the book several times over the course of their working relationship with an author. Every time she reads the book, Hannah wants to love it as much as she did the first time she read it. If an agent is passionate about a book, it is also easier for them to spread their infectious enthusiasm.

To grab Hannah's attention, it is worthwhile crafting a pitch that gives readers a chill or an unusual twist to an otherwise familiar story. Hannah is looking for something that will make her stop in her tracks and shout 'what?!' She is also concerned with gender issues and equality, so try to avoid misogynistic stereotypes - and that's great advice for life!
