Profile Summary

Originally from Dublin, Ivan has worked in London, New York and Stockholm. Ivan worked for international news agency Reuters for 13 years before dabbling with computer software. The change to literary agent came as something of a surprise after attending the Hay on Wye Literature Festival. While there in 2002, he met Charlie Viney and the two decided to go into business together. Viney has since left the partnership, but Ivan's dream continues as Mulcahy Associates, with a small team of five.

Mulcahy Associates is not particularly specialist in the areas of representation it covers. The agency takes on adult, children's, literary, and genre fiction. Ivan and his team are also interested in works of non-fiction, with an emphasis on the people behind the book. Rather than illustrating a passion for particular subject matter, he lists the kinds of people he is interested in representing: chefs, environmentalists, economists, politicians, TV presenters, and those who have lived extraordinary lives.

Ivan has found great success as a literary agent on both sides of the coin, from working with Vivienne Westwood, Ha-Joon Chang, Ian Kelly, Claire Balding, and David Mitchell on non-fiction works, to novelists such as Lisa McInerney and Juno Dawson. With such wide-ranging taste, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what might spark Ivan's interest. What is clear is that he has as much passion for his authors as they do for their subject matter.

His ability to take change in his stride has allowed Ivan to thrive in the current turbulent publishing industry. While he understands the problems associated with Amazon's ebook monopoly and the constantly diminishing margins, Ivan remains hopeful for the future of publishing.

Like many literary agencies, Mulcahy Associates find most of their authors through personal recommendations, but they still insist on the importance of the slushpile.
