Profile Summary

Like many agents, Jane moved from working on the side of the publishers to being an agent. With experience at two major publishing houses, Hamish Hamilton and Heinemann, as rights director, Jane understands selling books from both sides of the equation. She set up the Jane Turnbull Literary Agency in 1987 and has represented many bestsellers in her more than 25 years experience.

While the agency is very small, only having around a dozen 'active' authors at any one time, their remit is wide-ranging. From fiction to non-fiction, and even the occasional poet, there is little off-limits. But note that Jane specifically states that she is not interested in science fiction, fantasy, 'misery memoirs', or journalism (unless already one of her established clients). While her focus is on adult fiction, she does occasionally take on works for young adults. In the realm of non-fiction, she is keen to acquire works on gardening, craft, cooking, humour, natural history, biography, lifestyle, history, current affairs, and TV tie-ins.

Jane represents a wide range of clients, from zoologist and science writer Jules Howard, crafting goddess Ros Badger, and mindfulness writer Tiddy Rowan, to brands such as Higgidy (pies) and Fever Tree (cocktails).

There is little information online about Jane outside of the agency's website. Previously a historian and passionate about Civil Liberties, it is likely works covering these topics will pique her interest. Jane currently works out of an office in Cornwall while maintaining a presence in London a well.
