Profile Summary

After six years working as an editor at Headline and Orion, Jemima was headhunted by David Higham Associates to make the jump from editorial to agenting in 2016. Her work in publishing has made her singularly qualified to advise authors on what to expect from start to finish. Not only is she well versed in making structural edits on a novel, but she is also intimately acquainted with being on the receiving end of agent pitches.

As an editor, Jemima had to be sure that any novel she purchased would be marketable. She would have to pitch to the books she believes in to sales and marketing -- so pitching is nothing new to her. She is particularly keen to work with debut authors, want to help develop an author's career as well as working on individual projects.

To keep her slushpile manageable, Jemima tries to read a few submissions every day -- a very commendable goal indeed! Jemima reminds potential clients that hearing that a manuscript 'isn't quite right' for an agent is both as common as it is frustrating. Ultimately, publishing is an industry that relies entirely on personal taste -- the taste of agents, editors, and readers. For her to take on a new client, the work needs to be well written and something she is passionate enough about to fight for. And do remember that first impressions are important, so be sure to proofread your submission before sending them in!

In terms of her specific wish list, Jemima is very fond of fast-paced thrillers that have her on the edge of her seat from beginning to end. She is also interested in speculative fiction novels that create a fascinating world in which the reader can get lost in. Above all else, Jemima puts great characters as her number one hook. Obviously, great writing, an interesting plot, and originality are important, but she is definitely drawn to characters first and foremost.
