Profile Summary

Please note that the Jennifer Luithlen Agency is not currently taking new clients. Please check the agency's website for the most up-to-date information.

Jennifer has had a long career in publishing, from 22 years at Hodder and Stoughton Children's Books, to setting up her agency in 1986. She specialises in books for children and young adults, with a passion for finding great books that encourage children to read. Several of her authors have appeared on the Carnegie Medal longlist. The agency also has a specialised list of 'pony fiction', but it is unclear if this list is handled by Jennifer or Penny.

Based in Leicester, the agency consists of only two agents. As such, the number of clients they take on is limited. Despite the small nature of their business, Jennifer has found great success in her area of expertise. Writers such as Bali Rai, Pete Johnson, and Hilary McKay have been both commercial and critical successes.

Other advice and background:
You would not attempt to make music if you did not listen to it, so why do so many people think they can write when they do not read? You can learn a vast amount by knowing what is out there on the shelves and what is doing well. It is so very useful to be able to talk about your work in the context of the work of other successful writers and to be aware of the genres and age groups involved in children's fiction.

Currently not accepting work, but if this changes then the following guidelines apply ... We are a children's books agency and do not handle adult fiction. Ideally we would like to talk to you briefly about what you would like to show us. Please call us during office hours, although between 9-10am and 3-5pm are the best times for us to speak to you. If you are ringing on behalf of someone else, please don't. The author themselves must show that they have the confidence to call and talk about their writing. This is the first thing a publisher will be looking to see. The number to call is: 0116 273 5697. We do not charge a reading fee and we will look at everything that is sent to us. We will try and give honest feedback if time allows. We prefer it if new authors choose to send their work to us exclusively but if your submission has been seen by other agents and publishers we need to know this history and details of the responses you have had.
