Profile Summary

Jo Williamson joined Antony Harwood Ltd in 2008 after fifteen years in publicity for children's publishing. She took her love of children's books and moved from marketing books directly to readers to selling to publishers. Manuscripts of interest to Jo include picture books, YA, and middle-grade fiction. While Jo mainly represents rights for the UK book market, her agency sometimes works directly with US publishers and TV/film production companies. Otherwise, all foreign and media rights are dealt with via associated agencies.

For Jo, a new, distinctive voice is key to successfully pitching to her. While she acknowledges that reading and appreciating the greats will help writers learn what works, she is keen to encourage new writers to find their own style and interests. Writers should be passionate about their subject matter. Jo is also interested in finding children's books that deal with real-world issues in ways children can relate to. Her authors include award winner Jennifer Gray, Tamsyn Murray, Peter Bunzl, and Julia Wills.

The relationship between agent and author is the most important part of taking on a new client for Jo. As such, she loves attending events where agents and writers can mingle. At a previous SCBWI Agent Party, Jo met future client Andy Shepherd. Seeing Andy's passion for her project and feeling they would get along well together in a professional partnership, Jo was eager to secure Andy as a client.

There is very little on Jo's interests on the agency site, but she is relatively active on Twitter. To get a better understanding of what she is looking for, keep an eye out for events she is attending, as she regularly contributes to author and agent events where she can meet new writers in person.
