Profile Summary
John Saddler has run a literary agency and consultancy since 2001. He started his career in marketing at Transworld and has previously worked as an editor, an editorial director and a publisher at Black Swan, Flamingo, Anchor and Fourth Estate. He has also worked as an agent at Curtis Brown
*John represents literary and commercial fiction and general non-fiction including history, biography, memoir, current affairs, travel, and sport
*The agency publish a select list of the books that they have represented. However, it is not clear whether all the authors are still current clients. We do know that past agency clients have included Declan Hughes (crime); Susan Barker (Novelist); Russell Ash (popular reference); Duncan Staff (true crime); Kate Williams (history); Jamie Ivey (travel) and a number of television and sports personalities (Selina Scott, Adrian Chiles; football referee David Elleray; and sports writer Pat Butcher).
*John tweets infrequently @saddlerliterary. A review of his twitter feed, reveals that he is a keen runner (of marathons no less!) so books on athletics may well find a good home at this agency.
*As a consultant, John offers paid services like reading and assessing manuscripts and phone or personal consultations. The website suggests that there is some potential for consultancy clients to become agency clients but Agent Hunter subscribers should be aware that paying for John's consultancy services is not a sure fire way to guarantee his services as an agent.
*We believe John's agency is relatively small. He is assisted by editor, Karen Godfrey (in particular in relation to crime fiction), but there is no mention of any other agent working for the company.
*Our researchers have asked John for more data on his current clients and we are awaiting a response. We are always keen to update our agent profiles so if any subscribers have experience of working with John and can add useful new details, do drop us a line.
John Saddler ran his own literary agency for three years before joining Curtis Brown as an agent in 2003. A publisher for 14 years, he was until June 2000 Publishing Director of Anchor, an imprint of Transworld Publishers and before that the Editorial Director of Flamingo, the literary imprint of HarperCollins UK. He has also worked as an Editorial Director at Fourth Estate and a Senior Editor at Corgi and Black Swan.
