Profile Summary

Founded in 1960, the Jonathan Clowes Ltd Literary Agency has little in the way of a public presence. The website contains the bare minimum of information regarding the business, listing what kinds of work they won't consider and a list of their established clients.

Despite being the founder and namesake of the company, Jonathan appears nowhere on the company's site. While the homepage presents visitors with a scanned image from an interview with Jonathan from 1970, this is the only nod to him. It is unclear whether he is still an active agent, as only his colleagues Nemonie Craven Roderick and Olivia Guest are available for submissions.

The client list for the agency is impressive, including Doris Lessing's estate. It looks to cater to literary fiction and non-fiction writers, having a number of journalists on their roster. Environmental campaigner and broadcaster, David Bellamy OBE, is another high profile writer under the agency's care. The agency's books often make it onto prize longlists and have an impressive critical pedigree.

While the agency does represent film and television writers as well as prose writers, you may not approach them for media representation without previous success in the industry. Though most fiction will be considered, the client list does suggest a high-brow literary bent to the agents' tastes. Do not bother submitting any science fiction, short stories, or poetry, however, as they are not interested. Non-fiction, particularly from well-establish personalities and experts in their field, is welcomed. This does not, however, include academic writing.

From the little information that is available on Jonathan Clowes, he does not appear to be a particularly active agent, with many of his clients being the estates of established writers.
