Profile Summary

With over 40 years in the industry, Julian Friedmann is a well-respected and successful agent, representing both screenwriters and book authors. Julian set up his agency in 1976 before joining Carole Blake to create Blake Friedmann. Since then, the agency has established itself as one of the top literary agencies in London.

Currently, Julian is only taking on new script writers, though he continues to work with existing book clients. Outside his work as an agent, he ran ScriptWriter Magazine, as well as having written books and lectured on the subject. Julian not only represents screenwriters but can also act as producer. His clients include Ross Devenish, whose work includes adapting Dickens' Bleak House for the BBC, Andrew Cartmel, a previous Doctor Who writer, and Lucy Hay, screenwriter of Danny Dyer's Deviation.

While Julian likes to discuss the do's and dont's of screenwriting, he dislikes the generic approach many classes and writing advice pieces take when it comes to writing for the screen. There is no magic formula to make your work worthy of production, but there are certainly story elements, presentation rules, and stylistic missteps to keep in mind.

Not only does Julian have many contacts within the industry, but he has also been a member of several film award juries and an advisor for the London Screenwriting Festival. As such, he has experience of critiquing scripts from multiple points of view: as teacher, agent, and industry critic.

He is a regular attendee of conferences and workshops, and is highly approachable. Julian is passionate about finding brilliant new voices in screenwriting while being conscious of the need for writers to make money. Balancing the commercial with the creative is a challenge, but his years of experience have given Julian a thorough understanding of how best to navigate the two colliding worlds.

Client list status:
List largely complete
Genres this agent is interested in:
Memoir and autobiography
Authors & books liked:
My favourite writers (in a purely subjective sense) are probably James Thurber and Damon Runyan. This is probably because they were the writers who really got me interested in writing many decades ago. I don't read nearly as widely as I should because with 200 clients at the Agency and all the material that gets offered to us I don't really have much time to read outside work.
Other loves & passions:
I'm very fond of shows like 'Coupling', 'Spooks' and I really enjoyed the movie 'Etre Et Avoir'.
How to make a submission:
Agency standard submission.
Other advice and background:
Note that Julian works almost entirely on the film sde these days, so is NOT open to new submissions by writers of books.
