Profile Summary

Karolina has been an agent since 1995, initially at the Hollywood and New York super-giant, International Creative Management and then at Curtis Brown.

She has an eclectic and exciting list that we analyse as follows:

•    A number of international and top-end literary clients, including Haruki Murakami, Aravind Adiga (who won the Booker for A White Tiger), and Margaret Atwood (an author shared with Vivienne Schuster, also at CB).
•    A number of international activists and thinkers of a generally left-leaning nature: Naomi Klein (the feminist and green polemicist), the astonishing Malala Yousafzai (the Pakistani teenager who fights for girls’ education and won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize), Ed Caesar (a journalist who’s won Amnesty awards for his foreign reporting on jihadist recruitment), Grayson Perry (the transvestite artist and Turner Prize winner).
•    A significant number of serious US-based literary novelists (George Saunders, Ann Patchett, James Salter, Anthony Doerr and others)
•    A relatively small number of genre novelists, notably Julie Myerson

It’s clear that Karolina does still take on new authors: among the names on her list are Eliza Robertson and Emma Healey whose debut work was published 2014/2015. Short story writers will also note that Karolina has a clear interest in shorter work . . . though she’ll almost certainly want to see some significant prize wins and a themed collection.

Of her own list, Karolina says, ‘I am drawn to great storytelling, excellent prose and original ideas. I enjoy high-end historical fiction, suspense, social observation, unusual points of view and atmospheric settings. I like championing novels which challenge as well as entertain.’

Karolina was shortlisted as Agent of the Year at the annual Bookseller awards in 2014.

Authors & books liked:

I'm always looking for exciting debut authors with a really distinctive style and voice, but tha's just the beginning. Good prose is a prerequisite for me to be interested in a manuscript, but being a good writer isn't sufficient, you have to have something exciting to say. I'd rather hear from an author who has a fantastic idea but is still perfecting his or her style than a beautiful writer who has nothing to say. Although I would never take on a writer who couldn't write, however exciting the premise of their novel. If you are a good writer with a great idea then the world is your oyster.

Other loves & passions:

Apple Macintosh computers. She describes herself as "pocket-sized" on her Twitter feed. Not sure if that's a useful lead or not ...
