Profile Summary

Kate might be new in the world of agenting but she is far from new to the publishing industry. For over twenty years, Kate has worked as an editor for some of the biggest names in the business, such as Penguin and Orion. She has continued her love of both fiction and non-fiction and is now eager to find new talent in both areas.

In fiction, Kate is particularly interested in finding new voices in crime, thriller, and psychological thrillers. For the most part, her tastes are commercial, leaning towards women’s fiction, reading group fiction, and accessible literary fiction. For younger readers, she is interested in works aimed at middle grade and YA readers. Like most agents, Kate is looking for stories that really stay with her. Something that tends to catch her eye is an interesting setting, be it contemporary or historical. While her tastes are commercial in nature, she does not shy away from high concept novels either. And if you manage to make her cry, you are on to a winner!

For non-fiction, she is looking for popular psychology and science, smart thinking, history, lifestyle and wellbeing. She wants to see writers explore big ideas and subjects that get people talking. Again, she has a keen commercial sensibility. Non-fiction that ignites the public interest is always going to find a market.

As a relatively new agent without an established client list, should you want to get a feel for her personal proclivities it is worth looking into the books she commissioned while at Penguin. While there, she bought books by authors such as Naomi Alderman, Karen Joy Fowler, Asa Larsson, Catherine O’Flynn, Marisha Pessl, Elif Shafak, Patricia Wastvedt.

Kate is actively seeking new clients and is well-worth approaching should you have either fiction or non-fiction with strong commercial appeal.

At Penguin I acquired novels by Naomi Alderman, Karen Joy Fowler, Asa Larsson, Catherine O’Flynn, Marisha Pessl, Elif Shafak, Patricia Wastvedt and works of non-fiction by Susan Cain, Hadley Freeman, David Horspool and Felicity Lawrence.

I’m a huge fan of Jessie Burton, Daniel Cole, Gillian Flynn, Robert Galbraith, Sophie Kinsella, Hilary Mantel, Jojo Moyes, Patrick Ness and Rose Tremain.

I’m also interested in narrative non-fiction such as GUT by Giulia Enders, WHEN BREATH BECOMES AIR by Paul Kalanithi and SOLDIER SPY by Tom Marcus. I am looking for more practical, prescriptive non-fiction too.
