Profile Summary

Laura had a well-established career in fiction publishing, working for HarperCollins, Penguin, and Heinemann, before transitioning into agenting. She first joined Jennifer Kavanagh as an agent in 1994 before moving on to MBA Literary and Script Agents in 1999. Her success as an agent has led her to be named Managing Director of MBA. Laura's passion for literature is not limited to her career, however, having helped set up the Harry Bowling Prize.

Fiction is Laura's specialty, though back in 2014 she did tell Novelicious she was interested in narrative non-fiction covering nostalgia, investigative journalism, and history. Her client list is varied across the fiction spectrum, including romance, crime, comedy, women's, and literary fiction. She is actively seeking writers whose work could be likened to Andrea Levy, Maggie O’Farrell, and Curtis Sittenfeld, as well as being on the lookout for the next big name in young adult fiction along the lines of John Green.

While her tastes are eclectic, she is not interested in manuscripts of genres such as science fiction, children's fiction, poetry or illustrated. Having said that, Laura loves writers who can use multiple genres, blend them in interesting ways, and writers who are confident in creating both prose fiction as well as film scripts.

Actively engaged in finding new clients, Laura regularly attends writing festivals and university courses on creative writing. Her long-standing relationship with the Romantic Novelists Association makes Laura an excellent option for romance writers while also receiving recommendations from the association itself.

For Laura, picking a new client to take on is about more than just good writing. Agents work long and hard to get writers works published with any payoff coming long after. As such, Laura wants writers who are hard working, committed to developing a long career, and have the potential to expand their talents across genres and platforms.

Authors & books liked:

Popular fiction, literary fiction and non-fiction, including history, biography, travel, self-help, health and parenting.

Other loves & passions:

It's incredibly important that the beginning of the book - the first few pages - is as good and original as possible. That's what makes us sit up. A clear, fluent writing style and a good dramatic situation and above all a character you immediately want to know more about. Also the synopsis needs to be short (ie no more than a couple of pages) and clear. If you can describe the novel in a sentence ie The Silence of the Lambs meets Henning Mankell (sounds crass I know, but it does really help!) - that is really useful for agents and publishers.

How to make a submission:
Please email all submissions to submissions@mbalit.co.uk. We do not accept postal submissions.
Other advice and background:

Bad spelling and grammar, single-spaced type (very hard to read), something that pretends to be fiction but is actually clearly autobiography (much better to be clear about which it is).
