Profile Summary

Pollinger Limited is one of the oldest literary agencies in the UK, established in 1935 by Laurence Pollinger, David Higham and Nancy Pearn after leaving Curtis Brown and celebrated its 80th birthday in 2015. Laurence's granddaughter, Lesley, joined the agency in 1985 and subsequently took over as managing director in 2001. In 2014, the agency had a controlling interest purchased by Peters Fraser & Dunlop (PFD), but Pollinger Limited continues to work separately (though from PFD's offices) under Lesley's direction. A small agency, it currently consists of only three people, two agents and one rights manager.

As well as taking on new clients, Lesley looks after a number of prestigious Estates, including those of D.H. Lawrence, John Wyndham, William Carlos Williams, and Dorothy B. Hughes. Over the years, Lesley has established herself as an exemplary children's fiction agent. Lesley is also interested in adult fiction and handles the agency's theatrical, television, and film rights.

The agency's website does not break down their clients by agent, nor does Lesley make note of any more specific preferences for authors and manuscripts she would particularly like to see in her inbox. In 2006, Lesley published Writing for Children along with co-writer Allan Frewin Jones. If you are interested in approaching Lesley with children's writing, it is recommended you first read her book to better understand what she defines as quality writing.

Lesley's client list is largely full, and the agency takes on very few new clients each year. If you do wish to submit to Lesley, you need to do so via post with a return stamped and addressed envelope. Be sure to check the agency's guidelines for submissions, as any that don't follow them will be immediately disregarded. In order to clear their slushpile backlogs, the agency occasionally closes to submissions, so be sure to check their current status before submitting.
