Profile Summary

The Hanbury agency was founded by Margaret in 1983.  One of her early clients was J.G. Ballard (who remained with her until 2009) and the first book she represented was Empire of the Sun.  She is a former ‘literary agent of the year’ winner and has over thirty years’ experience in the publishing industry.

Her career began with a position as secretary to Mrs Neurath, the Founder of Thames and Hudson.  Margaret is assisted by Harriet Poland and a media manager, Henry de Rougemont. The company represents sixty plus clients, and has a number of celebrity clients from the worlds of sport and entertainment.

•Client list includes novelists, historians, broadcasters, autobiographers, biographers and ghostwriters.

•Represents a mixed bag of genres from crime and women’s fiction to academic biographies of figures like Maynard Keynes and populist memoirs of sports starts like seventies tennis ace, Jimmy Connors.

•The agency rode the wave of celebrity memoirs in the noughties and has had massive success with Katie Price’s autobiographies and novels.

•The list includes some prestigious estates, for example, art and culture historian Kenneth Clarke, and punk icon, Malcolm McLaren

•Margaret doesn’t represent film scripts, plays, poetry, books for children, or self-help.

•Interested in digital and social media so it is worth considering how you would market your book online.  The agency tweets regularly @hanburyagency

•Attends the London Book Fair

The agency website says that Margaret is always on the lookout for new writers.  However, given her backlist and experience in the industry we suspect that she doesn’t take on very many new clients each year.  We have contacted Margaret to ask for further details on what she looks for in a debut author and will update this page as soon as we hear back from her.
