Profile Summary

Mariam Keen is the Director and Founder of Whispering Buffalo, where she is the sole agent.  Prior to setting up her own agency in 2008, she worked for Literary, Film and TV agency Darley Anderson, and Ali Gunn of Gunn Media.  Early career links to such big name agencies and agents suggest that she should have a good understanding of the publishing world. On her website she states that Whispering Buffalo represent, ‘individuals with a high media profile in a variety of fields’.  However, the website provides fairly limited information and states that it is company policy ‘not to publish a client list’.

We can confirm that Mariam welcomes new submissions; she accepts commercial and literary fiction; commercial non-fiction; and Children’s and Young Adult fiction.  She will also handle film, TV, theatre and radio but only for existing clients.

We've spoken at some length to Mariam, who tells us that she invites work from a very broad range of genres. She doesn't like to pigeonhole her particular tastes and preferences - and hasn't given us much guidance on specifics - but she tells that that she does encourage prospective clients to contact her (via the phone or email page on her website) to discuss potential submissions. When we asked her to give us some written detail on the kind of submissions she was interested in, she told us, "In keeping with agency policy I respectfully decline to submit an interview".

She tells us that her business is relatively unusual in wanting to keep a low profile and to remain distant from Twitter and other social media distractions.

The name Whispering Buffalo is something of a clue . . .
