Profile Summary

Peter made a name for himself as the bestselling author of Why You Don't Need Meat in 1986 after a brief stint as the director of the Vegetarian Society. His interest in vegetarian cooking led him to befriend Linda McCartney, who he helped establish as a vegetarian guru. He has since published over 20 books and set himself up as both an agent and curator of the creative space, Litopia.

In recent years, many agents have set up their own small presses. Peter believes this to be a major conflict of interest and blurring of roles and responsibilities, with the potential for agents to misrepresent their clients' best interests. As such, he encourages all authors to read their contracts carefully. He has also offered, in the past, to read through any author's offer of representation to ensure that what they sign is free.

Established writers and 'celebrities' may approach Peter at any time to query representation possibilities or simply to get advice. For new writers, however, the agency only opens for short periods at a time for submissions. Redhammer Agency specialises not in a specific genre, but in market appeal. Works that interest Peter must show themselves to have major international appeal. He isn't interested in books whose target audience would be limited geographically, but rather focused on global market domination!

Peter encourages writers to join Litopia, to learn from other writers and explore the supportive community there. Joining the site will also allow writers to keep tabs on Redhammer's open submissions window when it does arrive. Peter doesn't have a personal online presence, but is active in engaging with the Litopia community. The site includes podcasts, blogs, and discussion forums all designed to help writers achieve their goals.

Other advice and background:
Become a media whore. Publishing used to be centrally relevant to our nation's cultural life. Back in the 20th century, my first book scored both the BBC's 'Six O'Clock News' and 'News at Ten' (gee, when was the last time that happened?). Get in the media's face! Evangelise them until they call security; you'll win.

About the agency:
Most agents are happy just to do a book deal for a client. Then their attention goes elsewhere. That's never been Redhammer's approach. The deal is only the beginning. What else can we do? How can we look after you better? How can we help you and the publisher to succeed? We believe in being proactive. We actively seek out and exploit new opportunities. For example, we were the first agency in the world to host our clients' websites. The first to run communities for our authors' fans. That's because we see ourselves as your partner in success. If you prosper, we do, too. Redhammer has supported the net's oldest community for writers, Litopia Writers' Colony, from its beginning. Word palace, talking-shop and literary sweat-shop, Litopia is home to many successful writers. It is a place where friendships are forged and excellence in writing is developed. Radio Litopia is just one aspect of Litopia's continual engagement with new media. Litopia welcomes all writers who take their craft seriously, and it's a great way to network with publishing professionals. Most of the submissions agents see are simply not ready to be shown. Only by joining a critiquing group such as Litopia will you know, for certain, that your work is of sufficient standard to be submitted.
