Profile Summary

After more than thirty years as a freelance journalist and feature writer, Peter wanted to give back to the community and invest in emerging writers. To this end, he established Emergents in 2013, a community-minded project providing advice and support to new writers in Scotland. To further his quest to discover and nurture new talent, Peter has set up the Peter Urpeth Literary Agency in 2017.

The focus for the agency is simple: under-represented voices. While Peter obviously has a soft spot for finding Scottish talent, he is interested in works hailing from any locale as long as it is written in English. Diversity and representation are his watchwords.

Peter is interested in both fiction and non-fiction. In fiction, he is looking for women's fiction (but not when it crosses over into romance), literary fiction, and that commercial cash-cow -- crime, thriller, and mysteries. When it comes to non-fiction, he is currently looking for a broader spectrum of subjects, including travel, nature, popular culture/media, crafts, biographies, and cookery. When it comes to biographical works, he states that the subject of the work should be well-known with excellent commercial appeal.

Peter has provided in-depth instructions on his website as to how he would like to receive manuscript submissions, so please make sure that you read and follow them before sending your work.

Peter Urpeth Literary Agency
Agent since:
Short biography:

Peter Urpeth has more than 15 years experience in writing and publishing development, and many more as a writer and journalist.

The Peter Urpeth Literary Agency has grown from a passion for finding and nurturing new storytellers, but also a passion for different stories and from new and otherwise marginalised and under-heard voices in global, mainstream publishing. Hence this agency's focus on representing writers from localities, communities and cultures that are under-represented in the mainstream and on High Street bookshop shelves.

Other advice and background:
Children's publishing is a thriving but very dynamic and demanding industry, and without up to date knowledge, awareness, insight and guidance it can be a minefield for writers. There are significant new opportunities for writers who know what to write, what to pitch to publishers and how to promote their work, and these sessions will provide that kind of specific information. There can also be no doubt that a major new sector of the industry is digital story-telling and apps for children, and Kate Wilson and Nosy Crow are absolute leaders and innovators in that field and 'Reading The Future' will be an eye-opener for many who think they know about children's books.
