Profile Summary

Philip has been an agent for 20 years, with seven years at Curtis Brown as a film and television agent before joining Marjacq Scripts in 2003, heading up their books division. During his time as an agent, he has seen the rise of ebooks from the front lines and likes to remind authors of the service agents provide. After all, authors want to spend their time writing, so leave the deals and contracts to the agents who will make sure your work earns you as much as it can.

Both fiction and non-fiction are welcome on Philip's slushpile. He enjoys most fiction genres, especially crime and thrillers. However, YA, children's fiction, epic science fiction and paranormal romance novels are best sent elsewhere. At the moment, he is on the lookout for psychological thrillers, literary, historical, and commercial women's fiction. Like most agents, his criteria for loving a book is both vague and rather obvious: it needs to be a good story, written well.

For non-fiction, he likes books with a strong narrative thread rather than being too dry. Topics he is actively looking for new books in include history, politics, military, and humour. Definitely steer clear of Philip if you are writing a moribund memoir or something with new age mind, body, and spirit themes.

When submitting to Philip, he stressed the importance of following the submission guidelines. Authors who ignore these guidelines will not do themselves any favours. Philip receives between 100 to 150 submissions a week, so it is important to put your best foot forward. And remember, with several thousand submissions heading his way each year, he can only take on a handful of new clients at any time. There are lots of agents out there, so don't get too disheartened!
