I have worked in publishing since 1996, starting my career as publicity assistant at Bloomsbury, before moving across to their children's editorial department. I was lucky enough to be there for the publication of the first two Harry Potter books at the beginning of the phenomena which reshaped children's fiction making it the high profile, exciting area of publishing it is today. I read and wrote avidly as a child and having studied English Literature at university went on to do a Masters in Creative Writing at Bath before getting my first job in publishing. After leaving Bloomsbury, I gained experience at the successful packagers Working Partners - editing existing series and helping to create new commercial series fiction, before moving to Puffin to become Commissioning Editor. As Children's Editorial Consultant at The Viney Agency I work closely with our authors, guiding them editorially and helping them to achieve the high standard of submission expected by publishers in today's fierce market.

I still clearly remember what I looked for in a book as a child, what set my imagination on fire and what it was like to be utterly transported to another world. I try to find that in a manuscript and encourage our writers to strive to achieve that in their work. Write to us keeping your letter relevant to your writing. Please also ensure that you inform us of any previously published work and, specifically, what qualifies you to write about the subject. In your letter please enclose a synopsis or summary of your work which should be no longer than one page, together with the first twenty pages of consecutively written sample material. Non-fiction proposals can be sent to us on outline together with sample material, but for all adult and children's fiction we require that manuscripts have been completed before submission. Please let us know if your proposal is on submission to other agencies. The typewritten pages should be printed on white A4 paper, double-spaced and single-sided. The Viney Agency does not charge reading fees. Initially please only contact us by first or second class post (not special or recorded delivery, please) but ensure that you also provide us with your email address. There is no need to provide return postage since we do not return manuscripts unless specifically agreed in advance with the author and any manuscript which we do not accept is recycled.
