Profile Summary

Sallyanne has long been a lover of the written word. Unlike many of us with a similar passion, she has never wanted to write but loves to help writers in any way she can. From studying English Literature at both Trinity College and Queens' College, Cambridge, Sallyanne became a literary agent at Watson, Little Ltd in 2008. She joined Mulcahy Associates in 2013 where she continues to build a stellar client list of both fiction and non-fiction writers. In particular, Sallyanne loves working with debut authors, helping them bring their manuscript from idea to published book.

The two aspects of her role as an agent that Sallyanne enjoys most are being the writer's champion at all stages of the working relationship and working in an editorial capacity with authors before she starts submitting to publishers. While she advises authors not to start submitting their manuscripts to agents until they feel they couldn't make it any better, she acknowledges that role of an agent in advising on rewrites and edits. No first draft will ever be perfect; an author will greatly benefit from editorial input from someone who knows the market and what publishers are looking for.

In fiction, Sallyanne loves children's books, including picture books. She is also a great devourer of YA literature, including the big names such as Twilight and Pretty Little Liars. While she isn't overly keen on fantasy, if it is an added aspect to a strong YA narrative with brilliant writing, she will consider it. For adult fiction, Sallyanne is looking for literary and commercial works. She wants to find a great hook that pulls her in immediately and doesn't let go as well as a strong narrative voice.

For non-fiction, her wish list is more limited. Sallyanne is interested in receiving submissions for works on cookery/food writing and memoirs. In general, Sallyanne says one of her hobbies and loves is eating!

Authors & books liked:

My tastes are quite wide-ranging: above all, there must be a great story that will keep me turning pages and a compelling voice. Being from Dublin, I am always interested in Irish writing, authors from Australia and New Zealand, as well as anything with a multicultural slant. Anything that makes me cry will also win me over! In adult fiction, I adore smart female writers such as Curtis Sittenfeld, Emma Donoghue, Maggie O'Farrell and Liane Moriarty. I get excited by stories told in a new way, such as Anthony Doerr'stake on WW2 in'All the Light We Cannot See' and the excavation of family and relationships, as in Jenny Ofill's magnificent portrayal of marriage in 'The Department of Speculation'.

In young adult and children's fiction, my tastes range from literary novels such as those by David Almond, Meg Rosoff and Louis Sachar, to the very commercial. In YA, I would love to find a foot-popping story of first love and in YA and younger fiction, something that feels fresh and exciting - whether in terms of concept or voice. I'm lucky to represent a growing list of talented illustrators and am always looking for outstanding picture book texts - particularly those that have the magical combination of making you laugh while warming your heart.

When I read non-fiction, I want to learn something new and be thoroughly engaged; think 'Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind', ' or 'Freakonomics'. I am also a fan of brilliantly written memoirs and extraordinary personal stories, and exciting food writing.

Other loves & passions:
I grew up on the coast of Dublin so try to get to the sea as often as I can. I love to travel and learn about new places in real life or books and am fascinated by secret or untold histories.
How to make a submission:
Agency standard submission.
Other advice and background:
I am not particularly drawn to crime or genre sci-fi or fantasy, but I could certainly be convinced otherwise by brilliant writing. I am also a big fan of a good story, so a beautifully written novel with little plot would not be likely to win me over. I think the main mistake authors make is sending their typescript out too early. Very rarely is a first draft perfect, and I would advise not beginning to query until you can't see how you can continue to improve your typescript. It also helps if authors have researched the agent they are submitting to; most agents have profiles on agency websites so there shouldn't be any excuse for sending projects to agents in genres they don't handle. Most importantly, as agents have limited time to read unsolicited submissions, you need to grab their attention and often less is more when it comes to query letters. I'd also advise to read as much as you can in the genre you are writing in, and keep trying.
