Profile Summary

Samar started Rocking Chair Books in 2012 after six years as a Director at Toby Eady Associates. Her first role in publishing was as a literary scout for the international market. Samar's agency was founded on a very simple motto: original, page-turning books. It might sound simple, but it is hard to get right. She represents adult fiction and non-fiction in most commercial genres (no science fiction, fantasy, horror).

Rocking Chair Books is a small, independent agency and as such, Samar takes on few new clients each year. That said, she is still actively looking to build her client list, so if you think your manuscript would appeal to Samar's taste, she is well worth the effort of a submission.

The 'original' aspect of what she is looking for comes down to that unique hook that sets the book apart from others on the bookstore shelves. She recommends that you read blurbs of books in a similar genre to your work and use them as inspiration for your cover letter. Learn how others sell books to readers, and you are on your way to selling your book to an agent. The other key pieces to a manuscript that Samar will choose to take on are a) voice and b) writing talent. These are hard to pin down outside personal taste but do make sure your submission is as error-free as possible before you send it out.

Samar has both good and bad news in regards to the much-maligned book synopsis. On the plus side, it will generally be the sample chapters that prompt an agent to ask for a full manuscript. However, if the synopsis looks like your book completely loses the plot before the end, they might think twice before committing to reading the whole thing. As such, make sure your synopsis is clear and represents the full plot accurately, but worry more about selling your skills in your sample chapters.
