Profile Summary

British-born Susanna Lea opened her eponymous agency ‘Susanna Lea Associates’ in 2000 in Paris.  Before setting up her own company, she worked in the international division at Robert Laffont.

Susanna’s agency has offices in Paris, New York and London, and the firm prides itself on its global appeal.  Staff speak an impressive combined range of languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Tamul, and Hindi) and prospective clients must demonstrate ‘potential on an international level’.  Susanna’s motto is allegedly “Published in Europe, Read by the world”.  We believe that Susanna herself is based in Paris.

The agency’s authors write non-fiction and fiction and describe their taste as ‘eclectic’.  However, our researchers think that they represent more commercial fiction rather than literary fiction.  Notable successes include Marc Lévy whose debut novel, Si C’était Vrai (If Only It Were True), was subsequently translated into 38 languages and optioned by Steven Spielberg. Other prominent clients include Ayaan Hirsi Ali, whose book Infidel was translated into 35 languages and David Servan-Schreiber.

Be aware that Susanna Lea only accepts submissions via email and does not handle poetry, plays, sci-fi, educational text books, illustrated books or short stories.

The website refers to a ‘team’ but beyond the contact details for each country’s office manager, agents are not named on an individual basis and individual client lists are not publically available.  This makes it hard to offer an in depth analysis of Susanna’s personal tastes.  Individual preferences may not carry as much weight here in any case, as the agency is keen on collaborative working and says that they ‘consider all projects as a group before committing to taking them on’. Clients are allocated a primary agent but other staff are likely to have input on your manuscript and the overall publication process.

The London arm of the agency has a twitter handle @SLALondon which gives more specific information about authors and books currently being represented in the UK. We would also advise you to check out Kerry Glencorse’s Agent Hunter profile, as she heads up the London office.
