Profile Summary

Please note Toby Eady Associates was acquired by Literary agency David Higham in 2015. We advise you not to submit your MS to this agent.

Toby will continue to work independently but his work will primarily involve looking after English-language rights to his existing authors' work.  Toby is a very experienced international agent, who set up on his own in 1968.  He is the youngest son of the author, Mary Wesley, and prior to becoming an agent, he worked in banking.

Toby’s high profile clients include Bernard Cornwall, John Carey and Rachel Seiffert.  He has been particularly successful in representing modern Chinese writing over the past twenty years. He famously launched Jung Chang's internationally best-selling memoir, Wild Swans. However, he has always kept a deliberately small client list, ‘My relationship with my clients is deeply personal. I take on responsibility for my client's hopes, dreams and fears. I have only about 30 clients’

The Toby Eady Associates website is no longer working properly, and given the company merger and his already highly selective client list, we suspect that Toby is no longer actively building a list.  We suggest new authors seek out another comparable agent on the site.

Toby comments: "Great books come from nowhere. The classic writers had it and taught it. You can find books and you can find writers but you can't find a common language for the world. An agent dreams of finding those writers who write something you have never imagined who write from a totally different perspective. If you are lucky you will see that originality once in every seven years."
