Profile Summary

Vicki had her agent hat on before she'd even established the Bright Group. Seeing a gap in the market for representation of excellent children's illustrators and writers, Vicki got to work on creating the best possible place for them. The agency prides itself on being more than just an ordinary literary agency and more of a 'bespoke career management service'. After all, the creation of the product is just the beginning.

With experience as a graphic designer and a love of stories told through images, Vicki set up the Bright Group in 2003. Since then, the agency has gone on to represent some of the best-known talents in children's publishing, including Sue Hendra, Benji Davies, and Adam and Charlotte Guillain. Vicki prides herself on her relationships with publishers as well as her ability to market books all over the world, including pitching successfully to Hollywood.

Her taste does not usually cover darker stories. For Vicki, the best stories are those that deal with ordinary subjects children across the globe can relate to. These accessible subjects work extremely well when told with an interesting hook, be that seasonal or tapping into a commercial trend. Having many twists and turns within the narrative helps keep children interested. Vicki is also particularly looking for stories with great warmth and humour. She is keen to find titles that can be expanded into globally successful series that have the potential to spawn multiple marketing and media opportunities.

Vicki, as well as the agency as a whole, almost exclusively deal with writer-illustrators. While illustrators who don't write may find representation with the Bright Group, children's writers who don't illustrate are better off looking for representation elsewhere. The agency's specialty in illustration means they are able to keep their clients up-to-date on all major industry trends and ensure their clients are best placed for continued success.

Detailed data

Agency:
Bright Literary Agency
Agent since:
2003
Short biography:
Vicki set up The Bright Agency in 2003 after she spotted a gap in the market for developing unpublished talented illustrators. Bright Literary Agency was born out of this, with our picture book illustrators wanting to develop their writing, and requests from publishers for content. Vicki had great success, with author/illustrators like Sue Hendra and Rebecca Elliott publishing bestselling and award winning books. The natural progression for the agency was to move into fiction, so BLA started to bring on board fiction and picture book authors, not just author/illustrators. One of these is Ali Cronin, the author of the successful Girl Heart Boy young adult series with Puffin.
