Profile Summary

Please note that Victoria Birkett's fiction list is currently full. The agency is only accepting picture book submissions at the moment. Please check the Miles Stott Agency website for the most up-to-date information.

With over twenty years of experience in children's publishing, including stints at Heinemann Young Books, HarperCollins Children's Books, and Scholastic UK, Victoria brings a wealth of industry knowledge to her current position as children's literary agent at the Miles Stott Agency. She has been establishing a strong list of children's authors since 2009. Above all else, Victoria wants to find great books that encourage children to read.

While Victoria's focus is on works for children aged 8 through 12, she also represents several YA writers. Unique voice and an engaging plot are her top two features she is on the lookout for in manuscripts in her slushpile. She stresses the importance of sticking to the submissions process outlined by her agency, particularly in regards to sending the first three chapters of the manuscript. If you send in what you feel are your strongest chapters from all over the place in the story, it is much harder for an agent to come to grips with the story. If you do, the submissions will likely be discarded automatically.

Victoria lists The Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier, Carrie's War by Nina Bawden, and Charlotte Sometimes by Penelope Farmer as three of her favourite children's books she read as a kid. When looking for new clients to take on, Victoria hopes to find writers that will similarly inspire young people today to develop a life-long love of reading. Some of her current clients include Gill Lewis, Rachel Carter, and Sarah Hammond.
