Profile Summary

Zoe began her career as an agent at the Darley Anderson Literary TV and Film Agency, and subsequently, the Christopher Little Agency, where she represented established and debut authors.  She is a partner at the agency, and more importantly for Agent Hunter subscribers, the main submissions handler, so is likely to be the first person to read your manuscript.

The agency do not publish an individual agent client list but their website states that they will consider all genres, including short stories and picture books.  The overall client suggests a strong interest in children’s and teen fiction (this is the agency that represents Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling after all). Celebrity memoir (Pearl Lowe, Westlife’s Shane Filan), accessible psychology (Professor Daniel Freeman ‘The Stressed Sex’) and commercial fiction (Sophie Nicholls e-book sensation the ‘Everyday Magic Trilogy’) are also clearly areas of strength.

  • Her agency profile offers ten top tips for writers which include writing a road map to ensure you have ‘a clear story line and structure’ and preparing a ’30 second pitch for your manuscript’.  Definitely worth perusing this if you are thinking of submitting to Zoe.
  • Zoe has previously expressed an interest in space, dystopian fiction and historical fiction (think Philippa Gregory for a young readership),
  • Outside of publishing, she is interested in the Arts and enjoys cooking, travel and surfing so these areas might also catch her interest on the slush pile.
  • Stephen King is one of her favourite writers
  • She studied modern languages at Bristol University and the Sorbonne and has a background in advertising
  • Believes all writers should have an online presence
  • Tweets about literary life @zoekingtbp

Detailed data

Agency:
The Blair Partnership
Agent since:
2005
Short biography:

I grew up in Central London and studied modern languages at Bristol University and the Sorbonne. Next came a year among extended family in Cornwall setting up and running a fish restaurant where I discovered a capacity for hard work. I moved back home to work in advertising as an account manager. However my combined love of books and business quickly drew to me to the world of agenting. I spent six happy years at the Darley Anderson Literary TV and Film Agency as an associate agent managing bestselling and emerging writers, learning about negotiation, author care, and the ins and outs of building a happy and productive team. After moving on to the Christopher Little Agency I joined Neil, Lucy and Anouska to establish The Blair Partnership. As an agent, it's my job to maximise commercial potential and take care of business, leaving our writers to get on with what they love: thinking, creating, and writing. We want our authors to feel delighted with their working life, and to know that they're in the best possible hands.

'Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions' by Edwin A. Abbott, 'The Leftovers' by Tom Perrotta.

Other loves & passions:

As well as making deals and building revenues, I love the unique relationship with each client, working together to bring their creative vision to fruition. When not fighting writers' corners or immersing myself in new manuscripts, I love cooking, high days and holidays, surfing, and the Arts in general.

How to make a submission:
Agency standard. As the main submissions handler at The Blair Partnership, I'm inspired daily by the feeling that the next literary and entertainment sensation is right around the corner too.
